Our Board is currently in negotiations with Tasman District Council regarding a proposed new dam at Lee Valley near Richmond. The Waimea Community Dam proposal involves Ngāti Koata because part of the reservoir and surrounding catchment area is on land owned by Ngāti Koata. The land was returned to the iwi as part of our commercial redress and is currently leased to Tasman Forest Ltd.
A commercial long term lease of the lake bed and surrounding catchment area owned by Ngāti Koata, shares in the dam company, naming rights, and discussions regarding access are still being negotiated. The Board hope to report back to the iwi very soon on the resolution.
